Edwards Sports is based in the Dorset market town of Bridport, world famous for its rope and net manufacturing heritage.
Bridport has been an important centre for the production of rope, twine, netting and sailcloth, originally made from flax and hemp, from the 13th Century and possibly earlier. The company was first established by William Edwards (a sailcloth weaver) in the mid 1800s and manufactured rope and twine. Over the next 20 years two significant markets opened up for the Edwards business – lawn tennis and football. Edwards became the official supplier to Wimbledon in the 1870s – an arrangement that continues today – and very soon after they received the exclusive manufacturing rights to produce the football goal nets for the English Football Association.
Whilst the types of materials used today may have evolved from hemp and flax to man-made yarns and fabrics, Edwards Sports continues to uphold the traditions of skilled manufacturing and expert product knowledge.
We are very proud of our net making heritage and have over the years supplied our sports products to many high profile events and venues throughout the world. We continue to supply the Wimbledon Championships and more recently this has included the London 2012 Olympic Games, the MCC Cricket academy at Lords and many Football and Rugby Clubs across the country.
As of December 2015 Edwards Sports became part of the Bridport based Huck Group, securing the long term future of the company by becoming part of the largest net manufacturer in the UK. Huck Nets are specialists in netting and associated products, manufacturing high quality knotless netting products for all industries including sport. By combining Edward Sports products and expertise with Huck’s Sports Division we are now able to offer an even wider range and choice of products to our customers.
